About Energy Deregulation
Not long ago, only one utility company could provide your home or business with energy service. Essentially energy generation, transmission and distribution were all handled by the same company. Over time, state utility commissions began to see the many benefits associated with competition for electricity and natural gas supply. Customers could choose their energy supplier, and the delivery of the energy would still be the responsibility of the customer's local utility company.
A customer's ability to choose their utility provider based on their needs and the availability of service is the basis of deregulated energy policy. Many energy customers experience increased efficiency and greater savings because deregulation creates greater competition among utility companies and often times energy competitors have to find new and innovative ways to attract customers such as cutting the price of their services.
